PLOT
A secret diary, a broken stone talisman and the
long-decayed remains of a mother and her child...
The dark attic of a sinister mansion holds the secret to
a grisly past. A past best left dead and buried. Until
one woman is foolish enough to prise open the lid of the
coffin, peer inside and unleash the powers of the
unquiet dead; the violent spirit of a cruel slave-trader
- the owner of the mansion a century before - and a man
cursed by his dying slaves and transformed into a
horrific mutation. History starts to repeat itself and
wreak havoc. Strange, shocking deaths haunt the house.
Madness grips the woman's husband, and threatens her and
her child. Only one thing can lay the violent ghost to
rest, a trip back through time, to confront the evils of
the past.
RIP NOTES
Richard Friedman's prosperous directing career
includes such classics as Death Mask, several episodes
of Baywatch Nights, and, as recently released by us, the
insufferable Kristin Davis horror flick Doom Asylum.
1987 was a busy year for Mr. Friedman, since he released
not only Doom Asylum, but also Scared Stiff, known
variably by the name of The Masterson Curse due to yet
another, unrelated Hong Kong film named Scared Stiff for
the English speaking market, also released that same
year.
This particular Scared Stiff is sort of your
run-of-the-mill haunted house flick, a la the
neverending Amityville series, but on a budget, and with
a musical psychiatric twist. Even after 13 iterations,
this is likely to feel cheaper than anything with that
name tacked onto it, and even with Mark Frost (of Twin
Peaks fame) as one of its writers, sitting through this
will probably still feel like a chore. Even so, there's
a bit of humor thrown in (both deliberate and
involuntary), some gory and cheesy special fx, and some
classic 80s horror action to redeem this otherwise
largely sleepy affair.
WHO WE ARE
Since 2003, FLAiR has been dedicated to preserving
the neglected titles of an entertainment era long gone.
A time of classic kids flicks, painstaking hand-drawn
animation and countless cheesy low-budget horrors. A
time when pop had a King, and rock had a Queen. A time
when special FX wizards ruled, and CGI was just one of
their many tools.
Driven by nostalgia and memories of better days, we
seek to relive those times, and share those memories.
While our belief is that the 80s represent the very
pinnacle of pop culture, we will not limit ourselves
to one decade, or any single genre. We will not ignore
the movies considered insignificant or even embarrassing
by the studios. We will not disregard a timepiece just
because it is dated.
Whereas most groups rely solely on digital sources,
there are still thousands of rare and out of print
titles, many of which have no planned digital release.
We've made it our mission to dig these out, clean them
up using the best hardware and techniques available to
us, and share them with the world. Be it VHS, Laserdisc
or more exotic formats, we're here to bring you the best
(and worst!) of decades past. So sit back and enjoy as
we uncover and pay tribute to an age of cinema we will
never get back.
THANKS
To everyone that has supported us over the years and
managed to keep this fun!
