PLOT
This collaboration between Jim Henson and Ed Sullivan
stars Art Carney in a dual role, playing both Santa and
the wicked magician who schemes to replace him. This
special has only screened one time since the December
20, 1970 airing on CBS.
RIP NOTES
After four years of doing guest spots on the Ed
Sullivan Show, Ed had become such a fan of The Muppets
that he decided to give them an hour of his show as a
Christmas present. They spent this time wisely, and
made not only the first of their many Christmas specials,
but their very first TV special ever, the result of
which you see here. This also marked the world's first
encounter with Gonzo, then known under his early name
of Snarl.
The rights to this is owned not by Henson but by the
Ed Sullivan folks, and since it hasn't aired for many
years, good copies are needless to say hard to come by.
This is the best copy we could find but it's still about
as bad as they come. We've done our darndest to clean
it up, including some fifteen hundred manual frame fixes,
but as they say you can't polish a turd. Check the sample
folder for a comparison avi that shows just how bad the
untouched source gets in spots. As a result of the fixes,
in some of the worst scenes, you'll see frame pausing and
stuttering. There are still some errors and misplaced
frames, though much fewer than before, and the audio is
poor at best but we like to think it's now slightly
easier to watch.
Enjoy!
For the month of December we've decided to
do something special. The FLAiR 2010 advent
calendar will be celebrating the life and
career of Jim Henson, from humble beginnings
until his untimely death 20 years ago.
Every day until Christmas we will be bringing
you new titles from the archives, including
specials, interviews, documentaries, clips
and behind the scenes footage, from every
type of source available to us. Our goal
is to provide real insight into the vast
output of one of the greatest story-
tellers of the 20th century, and the
many talented performers and enablers
that allowed true Muppet magic to grow.
Sit back and join us as we go looking
for the rainbow connection, and remember
to check back daily. We'll be listing them
here as we go!
