Riverboat entertainers find love, laughs
and hardships as they sail along "Old Man River."

Show Boat, the story of life on a Mississ-
ippi riverboat, began as a novel by Edna Ferber
in 1926. It was made into a Broadway musical by
Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II the
following year, and a part-talkie film with a
prologue of music from the show, in 1929. There
were two versions of the musical, in 1936 and
in 1951. But many think the 1936 Show Boat is
the definitive film version.

This is a brilliant musical! Maybe one day we'll
see a beautiful BluRay copy but until then this
is as good as it gets. Okay actually there IS a CAV
release of this same Criterion edition that should
be of slightly higher quality and which also
includes more extras. So it's as good as it gets
next to that.

We've added a 2nd audio track with commentary
by Michael Kreuger, an expert on all things Show
Boat. This is in fact the only extra on the CLV
Criterion release. The main track is set as the
default.

The much sanitized 1951 Technicolor version
may forever keep this from a proper release.
Enjoy this and do give the informative commentary
track a go if you like the film.
