PLOT
Tales of the Tinkerdee was a half-hour TV pilot written
and performed by Jim Henson and Jerry Juhl in 1962, who
tried to sell it to networks as a Rocky and Bullwinkle-
style fairy-tale puppet show. Unfortunately, the world
wasn't quite ready for Muppet madness. Tinkerdee didn't
sell, and the pilot never even aired. In fact, the land
of Tinkerdee was entirely unknown to Muppet fans until
1993, when Christopher Finch included a few tantalizing
stills from the pilot in Jim Henson: The Works.
RIP NOTES
We kick off our calendar (catch the scoop below!)
with a true rarity. As an unsuccessful pilot, this
never aired, and was completely unknown to fans until
it was described in the 1993 book Jim Henson: The Works,
together with a few stills. It remained unseen until
it surfaced in 2001, when the Museum of Television and
Radio, now the Paley Center for Media, hosted a showing
as part of their Muppets Forever! exhibit. It survives
only as a kinescoped copy, using a telerecorder to film
the picture from a video monitor, a common alternative
to videotape in the 60s.
Tales of the Tinkerdee is an interesting historical
document, not only for the reasons noted above, but
also because it shows how Muppet entertainment could
be produced even on a shoestring budget, with a two-
dimensional set and just a handful of people. Shot
before Frank Oz, their other most well-known puppeteer,
had even joined the company, this is also one of very
few known examples of Jerry Juhl puppeteering a
character, before he settled on just writing, which
he would continue to do for the remainder of the
century.
Enjoy!
For the month of December we've decided to
do something special. The FLAiR 2010 advent
calendar will be celebrating the life and
career of Jim Henson, from humble beginnings
until his untimely death 20 years ago.
Every day until Christmas we will be bringing
you new titles from the archives, including
specials, interviews, documentaries, clips
and behind the scenes footage, from every
type of source available to us. Our goal
is to provide real insight into the vast
output of one of the greatest story-
tellers of the 20th century, and the
many talented performers and enablers
that allowed true Muppet magic to grow.
Sit back and join us as we go looking
for the rainbow connection, and remember
to check back daily. We'll be listing them
here as we go!
