PLOT
An eerie, abandoned insane asylum. A bevy of
unsuspecting, nubile, bikini-clad coeds. A series of
brutal murders committed with autopsy tools by a
horribly mutated ghoul. A suspenseful horror movie?
Yes, but...
Doom Asylum is slashing with a snicker. Slaughter with a
smirk. Monsters with mouthwash. Featuring one of the
most gruesome maniacs ever to terrorize teenagers. And
he happens to have a wicked sense of humor.
Doom Asylum. Sidesplitting horror.
RIP NOTES
Every actor has to start somewhere, and inbetween
waiting tables, you take whatever acting work you can
get. As recently spoofed by Penny on The Big Bang Theory
with her early exploitation title "Serial Apist", there
are plenty of real life examples by real world Hollywood
stars. From Jennifer Aniston in Leprechaun to Renee
Zellweger in The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre,
flicks that might otherwise be forgotten gain renewed
interest when their lead suddenly make it big. If the
title in question is particularly embarrassing, or if
there's even a nude scene, you can bet your bottom
dollar there's someone looking to make an easy buck by
putting out a DVD.
Doom Asylum falls nicely into this pattern. An early
acting gig for Sex and the City's Kristin Davis, she may
not have any nude scenes, but spends her time on-screen
in a bathing suit, and she is joined by Ruth Collins and
Patty Mullen of, respectively, Playboy and Penthouse.
Beyond the bikinis, nudity and embarrassingly lacking
chuckles, there are few redeeming features. This is
likely to be among the least scary horror flicks you'll
see all year, with the coroner spending disproportionate
amounts of screen time watching old b&w public domain
alone in his little cosy dungeon, presumably as a
desperate measure to pad the already short runtime.
Everyone gets killed off one by one as horror movie
rules dictate, and before you know it, the slowest 78
minutes of your life are over.
To make your viewing less excruciating, we've included
the commentary track by director Richard Friedman and
production manager Bill Tasgal, as well as some brief
interviews with them and executive producer Alex Kogan
P.S. And now for something
completely different...
to FLAiR!
Yes, thats right! We're 10 years old! And, to be
honest, we're nearly ten months late acknowledging
it! Oh, how the time flies! And as we watch the sun
begin to set on the year 2013 we wanted to take a
moment to recognize, not only our significantly
belated birthday, but also the renewed energy we've
found with the passing of another great milestone;
the adoption of x264 standards by the SD scene!
We are absolutely thrilled that the XviD standards
and their terrible size rules can finally be put to
rest, and we're overjoyed that the adoption of x264
will greatly increase the overall quality of our
releases!
And so, with the demise of XviD, and our insatiable
compulsion to make a big-to-do out of anything the
least bit remarkable, we want to use this release to
say a hardy farewell, so long, and goodbye to our
ol' pal XviD. We had our ups and downs, and like VCD
before it, it was a good ride. We're glad to finally
be getting off though, as a much better ride awaits!
We'd say this format change took too long, and we'd
be right, but like our birthday celebration, it was
better late than never.
In reflection of our 10 years of releasing:
+ Greetings, respect and love to all our past
and present members. Thanks for all you've done
and continue to do! An especially warm thanks
to the team we've become over the last 5 years
and the life long friendships we've developed.
+ To our families, friends, affils and fans we
love you all!
+ And for anyone who might be confused by our
relative inactivity this year or others, let
us assure you we are not dead, we're a bit older,
and a bit busier with our real lives but we still
have a passion for our mission and have no plans
of going anywhere anytime soon. Besides, you know
we'd never settle for fading away! When the day
comes, you damn well know there will be a flood of
pres (possibly preceded by a sounding of trumpets)
followed by a FAREWELL nfo that would rival the
word count of Moby Dick!
Happy Birthday FLAiR, cheers to another 10 years!
2003-2013 / 10 Years
WHO WE ARE
Since 2003, FLAiR has been dedicated to preserving
the neglected titles of an entertainment era long gone.
A time of classic kids flicks, painstaking hand-drawn
animation and countless cheesy low-budget horrors. A
time when pop had a King, and rock had a Queen. A time
when special FX wizards ruled, and CGI was just one of
their many tools.
Driven by nostalgia and memories of better days, we
seek to relive those times, and share those memories.
While our belief is that the 80s represent the very
pinnacle of pop culture, we will not limit ourselves
to one decade, or any single genre. We will not ignore
the movies considered insignificant or even embarrassing
by the studios. We will not disregard a timepiece just
because it is dated.
Whereas most groups rely solely on digital sources,
there are still thousands of rare and out of print
titles, many of which have no planned digital release.
We've made it our mission to dig these out, clean them
up using the best hardware and techniques available to
us, and share them with the world. Be it VHS, Laserdisc
or more exotic formats, we're here to bring you the best
(and worst!) of decades past. So sit back and enjoy as
we uncover and pay tribute to an age of cinema we will
never get back.
THANKS
To everyone that has supported us over the years and
managed to keep this fun!
