Chan discovers a conspiracy when a low paying gold mine seemingly starts
to become profitable, and attempts are made on the owner's life.
Based on characters from the Charlie Chan series of novels by Earl Derr
Biggers. Biggers stated that Chan's character was inspired by the real
life from the Honolulu Police Department, Chang Apana.
Roland Winters was the third actor to play Chan in this famous series
of movies. He played in the final 6 Charlie Chan movies. The classic
series enced in 1949 with "The Sky Dragon". There were Charlie Chan
movies before and after this series from 1929- 1949, but none were as
successful.
The first actor to play Charlie Chan for Fox Films was Korean actor,
Edward L. Park in "Behind the Curtain" 1929. The part was small and
little is known about this pioneer actor. The next 12 Chan movies in
the series starred Swedish actor, Warner Oland as the famous heroic
and respectful detective. The next 22 movies for Fox Studios, and later
Monogram Pictures, featured sydney Toler, a native of Warrensburg,
Missouri as Charlie Chan. Toler is frequently regarded as the most
popular, endearing, and comedic portrayer of the character, especially
in his first 11 films for Fox. After Toler's death, 6 more Charlie
Chan pictures from Monogram were made starring actor/writer Roland
Winters from Boston, Massachusetts. Of the 4 actors playing Chan
in this popular movie series, only Edward Park was of Asian descent.
