PLOT
The New York memorial of Jim Henson was held
at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine on May
21, 1990, just five days after Henson's death.
The service began with an organ rendition of the
Sesame Street theme song, and "Rainbow Connection"
from The Muppet Movie. Then the Dirty Dozen Brass
Band entered, playing "A Closer Walk with Thee",
followed by clergy, the church choir, and family.
Colorful butterflies on metal stems, crafted by
the Muppet Workshop, were distributed to mourners,
who waved them while Belafonte sang "Turn the
World Around." A barefoot dancer in a sequined
costume and painted face danced waving a foot-
tall butterfly.
In addition to Big Bird singing "Bein' Green"
and the "Just One Person" closing, Muppet numbers
included the male performers singing "Baby Face"
in the voices of the chickens and "You Are My
Sunshine" in their own voices, Kevin Clash rendering
"Lydia the Tattooed Lady in the voice of Elmo,"
and Dave Goelz singing "I'm Going to Go Back
There Someday" in the voice of Gonzo. The service
closed with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band playing
"When the Saints Go Marching In."
RIP NOTES
On Wednesday May 16, 1990, at 1:21 AM, James
Maury Henson passed away at New York Hospital,
aged 53. He had become infected with the extremely
rare bacterium Streptococcus pyogenes (the same
that causes scarlet fever), and not realizing the
seriousness of his condition (he thought he might
have the flu), combined with his wish not to be a
bother to people, made him not go to the emergency
room until he started coughing up blood, at which
point he realized that he might be dying. He was
put on a mechanical ventilator and treated with
heavy antibiotics, but it was too late. He went
into septic shock, his organs shut down, and 20
hours and 23 minutes after he had been admitted,
he was dead.
The news of his early and sudden passing came
as a shock to everyone. The father of the Muppets,
a man with enough creative energy to fill several
lifetimes, was gone, with so many projects un-
realized. The result was an outpouring of affection
from around the world, from fans, professionals
and media alike. While several of his most high
profile 80s projects had not been the hits he
had hoped for and deserved, such as Labyrinth,
The Dark Crystal or The Jim Henson Hour, his
death gave resounding proof of how much he had
meant to so many. A great man was gone, and all
too soon.
Two separate memorial services were held, in
each of the cities where Jim had done the bulk of
his work - one at St. Paul's cathedral in London,
and another at St. John the Divine in New York.
While only the latter was filmed (but never
televized), the former helped inspire the funeral
scene in the 2003 film Love Actually - director
and screenwriter Richard Curtis was in the
audience. The services were open to the public,
on the stipulation that no one in attendance wear
black - a very specific instruction drafted by
Jim himself four year earlier.
This is one title we cannot well ask you to
enjoy, and instead we'll wrap up with Jim's
words: "Please watch out for each other and
love and forgive everybody. It's a good life,
enjoy it."
For the month of December we've decided to
do something special. The FLAiR 2010 advent
calendar will be celebrating the life and
career of Jim Henson, from humble beginnings
until his untimely death 20 years ago.
Every day until Christmas we will be bringing
you new titles from the archives, including
specials, interviews, documentaries, clips
and behind the scenes footage, from every
type of source available to us. Our goal
is to provide real insight into the vast
output of one of the greatest story-
tellers of the 20th century, and the
many talented performers and enablers
that allowed true Muppet magic to grow.
Sit back and join us as we go looking
for the rainbow connection, and remember
to check back daily. We'll be listing them
here as we go!
